What sort of flu season is expected this year?

Flu seasons are unpredictable. The CDC and WHO closely monitor flu cases to identify new viruses or potential epidemics or pandemics.

Has the CDC or WHO identified any new flu viruses this flu season?

On December 9, 2011 the CDC confirmed two cases of human infection with two different flu viruses. The cases were reported from two different states, West Virginia and Minnesota. Both patients have fully recovered. As of December 9, 2011, no additional cases of these viruses have been detected in the United States. Learn more about these new viruses.

On November 22, 2011 the Iowa Department of Public Health reported that a new flu virus was detected in three children. All three children have recovered. Iowa has increased surveillance for flu-like-illness to detect any additional cases of this virus. Learn more about the Iowa illnesses.
