CDC: 38 Million Doses of H1N1 Vaccine Available

In a briefing today, the CDC reported that there are 38 million doses of the 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine available to order – more than 11 million more than last Friday.  There is twice as much H1N1 vaccine available today as there was two weeks ago.  If all goes well, there should be at least 8 million additional doses available next week.

The H1N1 flu is still widespread in 48 states, with levels of illness higher than normal for this time of year.  There have been 129 cumulative laboratory-confirmed pediatric deaths related to the 2009 H1N1 flu since April.  This is up from 114 pediatric deaths reported at this time last week.  Two-thirds of the children who died had underlying conditions.

States and localities continue to work to get the H1N1 vaccine to the at-risk groups who need it most, including pregnant women, caregivers of children younger than six months of age, people six months to 24 years of age, person sons age 25 through 64 years old who have underlying health conditions, and health care workers.
